Simon Burns-Cox, Sculptor and letter carverAbout me

I have been a professional Sculptor and Letter Carver since 1997 working mainly in Stone and Marble.

I trained formally in Stone Carving in the UK and then went to Rome, Italy where I spent nearly four years learning the skills and techniques of Marble Sculpture and Carving from Italian craftsmen and artisans. Upon my return to the UK, I worked at The Bath Artists Studios in Bath, England, for six years and then moved to Edinburgh, Scotland in 2010 where I am now based at The Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop.

I sell my work and exhibit regularly in private galleries, public and solo exhibitions throughout the UK and overseas, My work can be seen in permanent exhibitions in Bath Abbey, Wells Cathedral and St. John’s Church in Edinburgh. I currently have a three year exhibition from March 2016-19 at The Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh and The People’s Palace Museum, the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, and the Riverside Museum in Glasgow, in aid of Poppy Scotland. The sculpture ‘FRANCE 1914’ was made to commemorate the end of The First World War. At the end of the exhibition, the sculpture will be auctioned in aid of the charity.

I also create Exterior Garden Sculptures for all types of gardens and urban spaces and make bespoke gravestones, memorials and headstones and offer all types of Stone Letter Carving for home and business.

I teach and offer courses in Sculpture, Stone Carving, Stone Letter Carving and Relief Carving to groups and individuals.

Specialities

Simon particularly enjoys the discipline of Lettering and has an admiration for Eric Gill’s lettering work, the acknowledged master of that craft.

Simon loves working with Marble because of its texture and the potential of its many veins and colours. Although many of his pieces are abstractions, they have their origins in natural forms. Simon wants people to handle them, to look closely, and to be reminded of hidden things in the world around them.

Things I love

I love the natural world and the beauty of the rugged Scottish landscape which I now call home. However, I also love to return to Italy to see family and friends and enjoy the warmth and sunlight after a harsh Scottish winter.

I have had a love of working in marble and stone for a long time. I love to work in 3D and create and develop something out of nothing. I also love teaching and introducing my students to the art of stone carving and watching them develop.

We are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master. {Ernest Hemingway}

  1. Interesting! Skill! (I never know where craft begins and art ends, so to speak)
