We are delighted to announce this new collaboration with Cassandra from Bookbinding with Cass, a brilliant and inspiring bookmaker based in Edinburgh. In this online workshop, which combines a live introduction session via Zoom with a series of clear, step-by-step video tutorials, you get to make your own personalised travel journal from scratch.

“Ute, that was a wonderful workshop. Cassandra is a great teacher and a lovely person! It was a joy to see everyone and do something so positive. Thank you again”

About the book

What’s extra special about this book is that it’s refillable and can therefore become your essential travel accessory for many creative adventures to come! The finished book consists of a refillable cover and four A5 (or US half-letter) size booklets. You can replace the booklets easily with newly made ones once you’ve filled them up with notes, sketches and other lovely things from your travels.

It also has:

  • A sturdy cover with leather spine and waterproof foil covering- suitable to brave all Scottish weathers 🙂
  • A handy pocket on the inside cover e.g. for small treasures you collect when you’re out and about
  • An envelope on the inside of the back cover for storing receipts etc.
  • Pen, pencil and brush holder
  • An elastic band to hold it all together.

The book will also be handy for taking the Wild at Art trip information – such as itinerary and important travel details – with you when you’re on the road. Scroll down to see some photos previous workshop participants have sent us.

We are very passionate about sustainability, which means the workshop materials are as responsibly sourced as possible.

“I loved, loved, loved the workshop. So fun to connect with others from around the world, and to learn a new skill. The instructions are very clear and easy to follow.”

About the workshop

Once you’re signed up we will post your kit which includes all the tools and materials you need to make your book and 4 booklets for inserting. In the kit you will receive two types of paper – thicker paper suitable for watercolour or ink sketching and slightly thinner paper for notes. And some Scottish treats to fuel your crafting work :).

To get you started, Cassandra and Ute will run a live 2-hour zoom session where we introduce you to the workshop, explain what’s in your kit, give you ideas on how to personalise your book and make a couple of booklets together. It’s also an opportunity for participants to get to know each other a bit and ask questions. Don’t worry if you can’t make the live session – we will record it and make it available to everyone who signed up for the workshop.

Following the intro session you will get access to a series of video tutorials which take you through the process step-by-step. You can access the videos and related resources anytime to create the book and booklets at your own pace.

And since you’ll already have the tools, the skills and tutorial access, you may want to make more books – they’ll be great gifts for your creative friends!

Gallery of creations

Here’s a gallery of photos participants from the first workshop have sent us. It’s fascinating to see how everyone puts their own creative personalities into their work:

“Thank you so much for this wonderful workshop! I really enjoyed to make my own refillable sketchbook! 🙂 The tutorials are very clear, so that also a person like me with more or less school english is able to understand almost all. 🙂 I am very happy with my book! It is covered with a form-colour-sketch from the Faroe Islands and inside I worked with a card I had printed from one of my paintings showing a village on the Faroe Islands. … My son already ordered a book with/in Dobby(Harry Potter)-style.”

“Really enjoyed this and think my book was lovely. Will definitely be doing this again, very successful sketchbook.I put a cover on my signatures so that when I take them out they are a book in themselves.Used my own mono prints and paintings.”
