I want to say a huge big thank you to my wonderful Immersive Textile Travels co-host @lucymacleodstudios !

Borders Textile Towerhouse, the oldest building in Hawick, is home to a fascinating collection that tells the story of the textile industry in the Scottish Borders. For our visit curator Shona Sinclair gave us exclusive access to some exhibits- including a selection of items designed by Bernat Klein, who lived and worked in the Borders. It was fascinating to learn about Klein’s work and philosophy!

The Scottish Borders have an incredibly rich textile heritage and their textile manufacturing was once one of Scotland’s most important economic centres. On Monday we visited two mills- the tartan mill @lochcarron_of_scotland in Selkirk and the cashmere mill @johnstonsofelgin in Hawick. It was fascinating to see how they work and we were impressed by the high quality of materials and the level of quality control that goes into each garment and fabric. (The photos are from Lochcarron.)

Our textile tours combine visits and talks with hands-on workshops with some of the best local textile artists. Here are some photos from the last couple of days - the stitching session with Susie Finlayson @susie_stitch_embroidery , the weaving workshop with Janis Embleton @shuttlethrower and the knitting session with Samira Hill @eildonhillsdesigns .

@atbirkhillhousefibre - a magical place! We met the different breeds of sheep, the peacocks, ducks, cats, goats…and of course the alpacas, with their big eyes that look into your soul 💕.

Another wonderful day trip - Border Kilt Craft and Border Mill!

One of the things the Scottish Borders are known for is cashmere knitwear. We had the opportunity to visit a real gem in the industry - Studio ROAM in Galashiels. Sonia and her partner produce the most gorgeous cashmere blankets at shawls, supervised by Enzo (dog 🦮).

What a wonderful day we had yesterday at the Great Tapestry of Scotland in Galashiels! The tapestry itself is absolutely incredible anyway - but the fact that the artist who designed all the panels, Andrew Crummy, and one of the main stitchers, @susie.finlayson , came along to meet with us and introduce us to the tapestry made the experience super special!! We also got to view the stitchers’ diaries to read the stories of some of the many stitchers who contributed. Thank you, Andy at @greattapestryscotland for organising this for us 🙏🏻.

Some photos from yesterday’s fantastic bookbinding workshop with Cass from @bookbindingwithcass . Such a fun day! Our guests got to make refillable travel journals and it was so interesting to see how the books turned out so differently with the same materials and instructions. Everyone added their own creative touches. The journals have already been put to good use on today’s day trip to Galashiels- watch this space 😉.
